Fly Tackle for the Stream Fly Fisher

When approaching the banks of a stream or river, you normally know where the fish are or should be. A careful and very quite approach is absolute fundamental in steam fishing. River trout have habits related to their food in their surroundings which differ from small bushed-in streams to narrow rivers.

Rods
For this type of fishing you will require a rod of between 81/2 and 9 feet with an AFTM of 5/6 to 6/7.

With these rods you can fish practically anywhere and under any conditions which will present themselves on a fly fishing trip involving small to larger trout.

For wild trout in small streams, I normally use a 3/4 rod where the biggest trout could be 400 grams and under. I never use a too light rod which will prolong the fight with the fish, especially if you are going to catch and release your fish.

Reels
Always choose the smallest and lightest reels possible in order to balance your fly rod, for this type of fishing it will act merely as a fishing fly line holder.

Leaders and Tippets
Clear streams and rivers demand a very light presentation so that your fishing fly settles gently on the water without spooking the fish. Line shadow and the flash of the leader should be avoided at all times.

Fly fishing tip
When fishing a very clear stream of river, always look for a spot where there is a disturbance or ripple in the water, it will mask your leader and tippet when casting towards your fish which will normally be waiting for its prey nearby.
